Is Active Sound Masking A Requirement In Healthcare?
There is some confusion about HIPPA and the steps needed to protect patients’ privacy. The law is clear, and according the federal government’s website, “soundproofing” and other radical steps are not necessary to be in compliance. They outline some basic common sense suggestions, but the law was intended mostly to protect medical records and their misuse.
THAT BEING SAID….
It makes all the sense in the world to add active sound masking to your best-in-class medical office or clinic. I know first-hand that the patient in the exam room next-door is not interested in my mother’s challenges with Lactose. A best-in-class facility keeps those conversations where they belong.
Active sound masking is not hocus-pocus or snake oil. We simply add wind or air sound up above the ceiling tiles. We make a diffuse and pleasant noise that masks the consonant sounds in words making them unintelligible. When speech is unintelligible, we ultimately tune it all the way out. It is that easy. And it is not expensive.
We use special , yet inexpensive, speakers aimed UP to diffuse the gentle ocean sound as best we can..such as the ATLAS M1000 Masking speaker.
This speaker sells for around $75 and you only need a handful for a few thousands SQ foot office.
Sound masking is NOT rocket science. Your local Atlas Sound rep (The Farm ..on the west coast) can come and tell you exactly what it would take IN YOUR facility.
I don’t need any (more) people knowing about my use of protective undergarments. Your medical, dental, our church counseling office should take this very inexpensive and easy step toward protecting privacy.
